VERY REV. FR. (PROF.) ANTHONY AKINWALE, OP

PREACHER: JANUARY 2018 NOVENA (JANUARY 1 - 9, 2018)

 

Rev. Father Professor Anthony Alaba Akinwale, OP was born in Ebute Metta, Lagos, on June 10, 1962. He had his early education at Mount Carmel Nursery School, Ebute Metta, from 1966-68; St Paul’s Primary School, Ebute Metta, from 1968-74; and St Finbarr’s College, Akoka, from 1974-79. 
He studied Philosophy at the Seminary of Saints Peter and Paul, Bodija, Ibadan from 1981-84, before proceeding to the Catholic University of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire at the time) where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology in 1987, the year of his priestly ordination.
 He obtained his Master of Arts and Licentiate degrees in Theology at the Dominican University College in Ottawa, Canada in 1991, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Boston College, USA in 1996.

 

Professor Akinwale began his teaching career at Boston College as Teaching Assistant in 1993, and later as Teaching Fellow in 1995.  In 1996, he joined the staff of the Dominican Institute in Ibadan where he became Professor Systematic Theology and Thomistic Studies in 2006. 
Since 2012, he has been Visiting Professor at the Institut Saint Thomas d’Aquin in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, an affiliate school of the Catholic University of West Africa in Abidjan, and at the Major Seminary of SS Peter and Paul, Bodija.

 

Professor Akinwale served as pioneer Dean of Studies at the Dominican Institute from 1996-2000, and President of the Institute from 2004-2016.  Under his leadership, the Dominican Institute received full accreditation of its Philosophy programme from the National Universities Commission for two consecutive times and full accreditation of its pontifical Theology programme.

 

A scholar of national and international repute and a proponent of quality education, Professor Akinwale is  past President of the Catholic Theological Association of Nigeria (2001-04),  past Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Theology (1999-2002), member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Inculturation Theology since 2000, Fellow of the DePaul University Centre for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology in Chicago since 2014, consultant to the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (1999-2001), to the Nigerian Anglican Roman Catholic Commission since 2004, and to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (2007-2015).  He was also Chairman, Planning and Implementation Committee of the Dominican University (2013-2017).

 

Professor Akinwale serves on the Board of Advisors of Nova et Vetera, an international academic journal of Ave Maria University in Florida, USA, and of the Abuja Journal of Philosophy and Theology. He is also Chairman of the Editorial Board of Catholic Weekly Independent newspaper and an unwavering writer since 2008 of the popular and widely-read column “Thought for the Week” in the Catholic Weekly Independent newspaper.

 

Professor Akinwale has authored three books, co-edited three, and published over 100 academic essays in national and international journals.  Apart from his academic essays, his articles in religious and secular newspapers have always been analytical and intellectual expositions of both pressing and timeless issues that bother on religion, philosophy, politics, education and development.  

 

In July 2017, Fr Akinwale was appointed by the Master of the Order of Preachers to serve for a term of six years on the Permanent Commission for the Promotion of Intellectual Life in the Order of Preachers.  The Commission is composed of eight professors in the Dominican Order chosen from around the world and advises the Master of the Order on issues relating to the Order’s universities.

 

On August 21, 2017, on the recommendation of the Governing Council of the Dominican University, the Board of Trustees of the University appointed Professor Akinwale pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Dominican University.

 

Professor Akinwale speaks Yoruba, English and French, and has a reading knowledge of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, and Spanish and Hausa.

REV. FR. CHRIS NNAMANI, OP

PREACHER: LENTEN NOVENA (MARCH 14 - 22, 2018)

 

Rev. Fr. Christopher Nnamani, O.P. joined the Dominican Order in the Year 2000 and was ordained in 2010.

 

After his ordination, he was sent to Our Lady of Fatima Gusau, Zamfara State where he worked from 2010 - 2011.

Then in 2011, Fr. Nnamani was assigned to St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba where he worked as an Associate Pastor till September 2013.

 

Upon the opening of the first Dominican House in the Archdiocese of Benin, Fr. Nnamani was sent to serve as the Chaplain of College of Education and Director of Archdiocesan Marian Shrine; all at Eguedaiken - Ekiadolor, Benin City.

 

At present, Fr. Nnamani is the Director of Students at St. Thomas Aquinas Priory, Domninican Community (the formation House), Ibandan, Oyo State, Nigeria.


REV. FR. MOSES IGWEBUIKE ANI, OP

PREACHER: PENTECOST NOVENA (MAY 11 - 19, 2018)

 

Fr. Moses Igwebuike Ani, OP joined the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), Province of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana, where he began his Pre-novitiate in 2007. He made his simple profession of the Religious Vows on August 28, 2008 and did his ecclesiastical studies at the Dominican Institute, Ibadan, obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy from the University of Ibadan and thereafter, made his Solemn Profession on August 8, 2013.

 

After his service year, Friar Moses completed his studies in Theology and was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Theology in 2016 from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum, Rome. He was ordained a Deacon on the 16th of July, 2016 by Most. Rev. Dr. Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo, the Catholic Bishop of Abeokuta Diocese. Owing to his quest for truth, Friar Moses completed a Masters’ Degree in Theology from Dusquesne University, Pennsylvania, USA and was ordained a Priest on August 5, 2017.

 

The month of August is indeed a special month for Rev. Fr. Moses as it provides him with many anniversaries to celebrate: Birthday – August 10; Simple Profession – August 28; Solemn Profession – August 8 and Priestly Ordination – August 5. He is very open and friendly with a burning desire to make Christ known and loved through his new assignment in the Province.

REV. FR. JOSEPH EBOW BAIDOO

PREACHER: JULY NOVENA IN HONOUR OF STs. JOACHIM AND ANNE (JULY 18 - 26, 2018)

 

Rev. Fr. Joseph Ebow Baidoo is a Ghanaian ordained for the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia, Liberia some years ago.

 

He studied at the Dominican Institute, Ibadan, Nigeria, Ss Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Ibadan, Nigeria and at the Faculte de Theologie Catholique, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic du Congo. At present, he is involved in Pastoral ministry in Liberia as-well-as teaching in Saint Paul's College Seminary, Gbarnga, Liberia.

 

We are happy to have Fr. Joseph Baidoo to preach our July Novena in honour of Sts. Joachim and Anne (July 18 - 26, 2018).


REV. FR. PASCHAL CHINEDU UGWU, OP

PREACHER: SEPTEMBER NOVENA IN HONOUR OF MOTHER OF SORROWS

(SEPTEMBER 7 - 15, 2018)

 

Rev. Fr. Paschal Chinedu Ugwu OP is a Dominican Priest of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph the Worker (Nigeria and Ghana). He hails from Udenu LGA of Enugu State. Fr. Paschal OP obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Ibadan in 2002 and proceeded to bag another degree in Theology from the Angelicum University in Italy. Aside from above, he has a Masters degree from the Duquesne University in Pittsburgh USA in the year 2006. In 2010, Fr. Paschal Ugwu, OP further obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

 

 

He was ordained a Catholic priest on July 21st 2007 and has worked at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church Obosi Anambra State from 2007 to 2010. He is currently the Director of Novices for the Dominican Fathers and Brothers in Nigeria and Ghana. At present, Fr. Paschal is the Pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Bremang, Kumasi, Ghana. He is an astute preacher, a good organist and a lover of football. His personal philosophy is "Whenever you kneel down to pray, do not be in a hurry to stand up".

REV. FR. JUDE MBUKANMA, OP

PREACHER: OCTOBER NOVENA (FEAST OF ST. JUDE THADDEUS)

(OCTOBER 20 - 28, 2018)

 

 

Rev. Fr. Jude O. Mbukamma, O.P. is a Dominican Priest of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph the Worker (Nigeria and Ghana). He holds a B. A. (Hons) Philosophy degree (University of London), M. A. Philosophy and M. A. Religious Studies (University of Louvain) and Ph.D. (University of Ibadan). He was the Spiritual Director of the Legion of Mary Curia, Lagos Mainland, 1977 - 78, Director of Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center, in Nigeria 1981 - 89.

 

He taught Philosophy at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Major Seminary, Ibadan, from 1980 - 89 and Logic, Philosophy of Religion and Philosophy of God in the Missionary Institute, London (1990 - 92), where he was offered the post of the Institute's first visiting Fellow. He is a reknown Charismatic Preacher, revivalist and a profound author par excellence with many local and international publications to his credit.
